Many problems can arise from the misuse of alcohol. Alongside physical health issues such as liver disease, gastrointestinal bleeding, heart attack, stroke and hypertension (high blood pressure), you will find other issues such as marital problems, loss of employment, domestic violence, neglect, and child abuse.
Mental health disorders, including depression, generalised anxiety, bipolar disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder, may be present.
Individuals may display depressed mood, poor hygiene, poor memory, evidence of injuries, insomnia, avoidance, nervousness/anxiousness, etc.

What causes people to become alcoholics?
Most importantly, family and friends must always remember that alcohol dependence is an illness and that the individual is not willingly destroying their life and others. Most often, in settings of extreme poverty with the inclusion of communities in Liberia, alcohol is used to escape reality. Alcohol misuse may also be a method of coping with trauma.
Family and friends should provide a safe and supportive environment by being understanding, forgiving and non-judgemental. Be supportive and find strategies that will help the individual without putting oneself at risk. Be prepared by educating yourself on the issue and willing to listen. As a friend and family member, do not neglect your mental and physical health; seek help from others and your doctor. Very importantly, you are not responsible for your loved one drinking problem, and you can not fix them.
