Bipolar disorder involves extreme mood swings from very low periods of depression to extremely high periods of mania over several weeks or longer.

Going from one extreme change in mood and behaviour to the next can be a confusing, complicated and exhausting time for the individual and family members. Understanding and patience are needed. The Individuals concerned should be strongly advised to seek help at the early signs of symptoms, and if they are reluctant, their family members should seek help.
According to the World Health Organisation Guide to Mental and Neurological Health in Primary Care, bipolar disorder can be effectively treated. However, if left untreated, manic episodes may become dangerous and lead to the disturbance of everyday living with a loss of the ability to work or function in society.
