Depression vs Poverty

How can you distinguish whether someone has depression if they are living in borderline poverty and may sometimes go two or three days without a decent meal or a place to live?

They will most definitely display all the symptoms below, maybe except for no appetite and the loss of interest in things they enjoy because they cannot afford it.

I am not saying a poor person cannot have depression; I wonder how one distinguishes depression from the signs of extreme poverty. It is very easy for someone living in the United Kingdom to be diagnosed with depression because, for one, these symptoms will probably not be the result of poverty, with no food and place to live and no access to any form of medical attention.

During the Civil War, I felt and displayed each listed symptom below except the loss of appetite and loss of interest in things I enjoyed. No food and running from bullets meant I couldn’t do what I wanted, not that I lost interest. What do you think?

Symptoms of depression:

Unhappiness

Hopelessness

Helplessness

Tearfulness

Loss of interest in things you enjoy

Constantly tired

Sleeping badly

No appetite

No sex drives

Various body aches and pain

Low mood

Stressed

Anxiety

Suicidal ideation
