Generational Trauma

Growing up in Liberia, we continuously prayed against generational curses whilst generational traumas were inflected across the generations by individuals within the family. Africans, more specifically, most Liberians (as this is my target group with whom I am familiar ) will loudly rebuke the devil but cover up for a rapist in the family. They will stand at the front of the pews shouting and worshipping and, at home, brutally beat their wives. This forty-plus years on from my childhood has not changed. Mental health awareness is fundamental for awakening and healing within communities and nationwide.
Until trauma is addressed in our communities and country, Liberia, women, girls and little boys will continuously live in fear, experiencing abuse generation after generation. Major traumatic events we have experienced, such as the brutal 14-year civil war and the death of many caused by Ebola, can only result in many living with increased mental health issues.
Acknowledging that we have a problem is the first step to recovery.
